Dear Moderator,

This is my A2 media blog. I have created a trailer for my film idea 'The Grim Truth' and I have also made a magazine and poster. These can be found below and my research and planning starts in September, http://gabysa2mediablog.blogspot.co.uk/2012_09_01_archive.html and my evaluation can be found here, http://gabysa2mediablog.blogspot.co.uk/2013_03_01_archive.html

Thank you,

Research & Planning: Location Recce

Research & Planning: Meeting Post

We have decided that for our trailer we are going to work together on cinematography, editing, mise en scene and sound.
We have chosen to do this because we thought the trailer would benefit from both of our ideas in each element.

Research & Planning: Film Magazine Analysis 2

The genre of the popular acclaimed film 'The Shining' is a horror film which is what genre of film we are going to make. The genre of Empire magazine is a film magazine and it has some typical magazine conventions such as as a masthead, bar code, issue number and price, shot type. This cover is different to other Empire covers as it is a special edition promoting the '500 greatest movies of all time'.

The cover of the magazine follows three colour rule well. There is only a few cover lines on the magazine due to the fact is a special edition.

The photo on the magazine is a close up taken from a popular scene in the film which people will be able to identify. The cover also includes a quote from the film which also hints at the genre as it is quite a sinister quite.

Research & Planning: Film magazine analysis 1

This magazine cover is promoting 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' which is a thriller film however it does use conventions seen in horror films.  The magazine genre is a film magazine.
The magazine uses typical conventions such as a masthead, cover lines, a bar code, issue number and price which shows it is a magazine rather than a film poster.

Unusually for a magazine it uses more than three colours rather than following the rule of three colours. The masthead and position statement are the style as the are on each 'Empire' magazine.

From the shot type with is a long shot you can tell the genre of the film. It includes both main characters and the lighting is dark which hints it is a thriller/horror film. The dark clothing both characters are wearing also hints at the genre.

Research & Planning: Film Poster Analysis 2

This is the poster for the film 'Case 39'. You can tell the film is horror due to colours used on the poster, the dark colours fit well with the genre. The layout of the poster is quite different from other posters as the steel tongs is nearer the top of the page to left with the title of the film near it. The tag line of the film is in the top corner. All the fonts are in white and stand out against the dark background.

The image shows the genre of the film well as the two main characters are crouching down.A long shot is used to show the two characters and as they are crouching down you can see the fearful expressions on their faces. The lighting is low key and this is stereotypical of horror film posters. The location shown in the poster is unclear and this adds mystery and could influence the viewer to want to see the film.

Rather than the typical 'Coming Soon' this poster uses 'They'll never stop' followed by the release date.Again this suits the genre and makes the poster more interesting

Research & Planning: Analysis of film poster 1

This is the film poster for the 2011 film 'The Possession'. The genre of the film is clearly horror from the style of the poster. The text on the film highlights the genre as it says 'based on a true story' which would be something that makes an audience want to see a film more. Another tag line used is 'darkness lives inside' which fits the plot of film as it about possession.

An establishing shot is used to show the young girl almost floating in the air with insects coming out of her mouth. The lighting is almost sepia toned and is unusual to most horror film poster as they usually use low key lighting, rather than the brighter light used within this poster.

The mise en scene shows the girl in isolated location, only lit by a lamp post. This fits with horror conventions. Although we can't clearly see the girls face it is clear she is only a young girl and she appears to be wearing pyjamas, again another stereotype of horror films.

Research & Planning: Make Up Test

I am going to test out some make up looks for each of our main characters.
The main character is have different personalities and this is going to reflected through mise en scene.

Character 1 'Popular, fashionable girl'

A natural look, 'flawless skin', pink toned blush and lips.

Character 2 'Copycat of character 1'

Same as character 1 show how she idolises her and wants to be like her.

Character 3 'Tomboy'

Very little make-up, concealer to cover any imperfections

Character 4 'Gothic'

Dark eyeliner, heavy. `Fits within stereotype.

Research & Planning: Distribution Companies

These are some popular distribution companies;

Film distributors are responsible for the marketing and advertising of a film. This stage is one of the most important as if the film isn't marketed well the audience won't want to see the film.
