Research & Planning: Genre Analysis

Horror
These films play on an audiences fears and many of them show the same features. Most horror films have reference to evil and the unknown. Most horror films contain;
  • Low key lighting- A lot of darkness and shadows are used to create atmosphere.
  • Music- The music used usually highlights what is happening in the shot and fits to the pace of the film. Again it adds atmosphere.
  • Visual Elements- This genre is a lot more focused on the visuals than other genres.
  • 'Based on a true story'- Some horror films use this statement to create more of a  reaction from an audience and a bigger fear if the plot is a reality.
Romance
These films usually involve two character who fall in love and have to overcome a lives obstacles to be together. These films usually contain;
  • Realistic- These films look at people in everyday life and are seen as more relatable.
  • Character creations- The two main characters in this genre of film have to be well developed to connect and appeal to an audience.
  • Sub genres include; Chick flick, Romantic drama, Romantic comedy, Romantic thriller.
Comedy
These films emphasis on humour and try to make the audience laugh. These films usually;
  • Have a happy ending
  • More focus on individual stars
  • Recent comedy films are usually aimed at more younger audiences.
  • Sub genres include black comedy,Romantic comedy,action comedy,parody or spoof films. 

Thriller
These films use suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements and create a range of emotions of the viewer.Thrillers aim to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seat. These films usually contain;

  • A protagonist, the main character fighting against a villain.
  • A problem to overcome/solve. (usually an escape, mystery or mission)
  • They use red herrings,plot twists and cliffhangers to engage the audience.
  • Sub genres are psychological thrillers,crime thrillers, mystery thrillers.
